What's Up With Xbox Media Center

MediaPortal 0.1

I didn't post about this when it was released, but I thought maybe it would be appropriate. MediaPortal 0.1 was released a few days ago by Frodo. Frodo is one of the co-founders of the Xbox Media Center project. The goal of MediaPortal is to provide an interface to your PC to give you a Home Theater PC (HTPC). The project is based on Xbmc, and from the screen shots is looking good. It will record Tv and do everything else Xbmc does. I'd love to get that Tv guide ported over to Xbmc some time soon. How bout it frodo?

  • Man I hope they add some form of integration between XBMC and MediaPortal in the future

  • technically they don't really have to. If you can use MediaPortal to record shows, and specifically tell it where to save them and what file name to use, then you could share that folder and have Xbox Media Center access it. Other than that, I can't think of another way you would need them to talk to each other.

  • Good point, but it would be nice if you could schedule MediaPortal to record shows through XBMC....that way you wouldn't have to go to your comp and do it yourself, it could be done through the XBOX....i'm sure other ppl would come up with different ways to take advantage of the integration

  • ahhh, VERY good point. That would be great. Do any other PVR software on Windows allow remote calls to be made to control them to set a program? that would be great for right now, a python script could be whipped up.

  • I don't know personally....I used to follow all PVR software but kinda lost interest cuz there was no way to link my TV in the family room to my comp w/ PVR software in the basement. Now, I think the possiblity is a lot better because of the XBOX so I'm looking forward to some form of integration. I think someone at xbox-scene said MCE 2005 and XBMC work well but I haven't read his entire post...I think I may later

  • Xbmc will not talk t XP MCE 2005. I dont even think it will play the files, since its go some wrapper around the horrible WMV files. It certainly won't program it.

  • There is the Nebula DigiTV card - its software can even act as a server for other PC's on the network to broadcast to.. and it has a web interface so that you can set recordings over the web...

My coding ability - well, lets not even call it that... anyway.. if someone could get a python script up and running to interact with it - I would owe them a big big thankyou... perhaps if i have some spare cash afetr xmas, then i'll put it up for tender ?!?!

  • Head over to the Official forums and post about that card in the Python General Forum. It might gain some interest.

  • Have done so indeed.
We shall see if it gets any interest going... who knows..

    Cheers !
